Other Countertops: Butcher Block, Laminate & More

After something different than everyone else? There are plenty of alternative countertop surfaces including wood, plastic laminate, bamboo, stainless steel, and concrete. Limit down your choices by considering your style, budget, usage & willingness to maintain.

other COUNTER TIPS & INFO

Laminate
Countertops

Very affordable option with thousands of colours and textures, many mimicking natural stones. Laminate is stain-proof, heat-resistant, making it well-suited for commercial use. Limitations include durability, chipping more easily, scratching, and no undermounting of sinks.

Concrete
Countertops

Popular for industrial or rustic looks. Poured in place, concrete can be seamless, raw, or custom-stained, with polished or matte finishes. Can be mixed with glass. Quite durable, but porous so will stain without frequent sealing. Small cracks may develop with time.

Butcher Block
Countertops

Consists of laminated lengths of wood, cut to varying sizes; can be custom-stained or left natural. Great in rustic or farmhouse-style rooms. Wood is very porous, requires more maintenance for sealing, keeping bacteria from lingering. Stains easily with spills.

Alternative
Countertops

More unique surface materials include metals such as stainless steel, zinc or copper, which offer nonporous bacteria-resistant properties and require only a quick wipe-down. Eco-friendly alternatives include recycled glass slabs, bamboo & reclaimed wood.
